Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2017
This is the fifth major release of NAV since the release in October 2012. The ongoing development and innovation continues to add value to the giant install base as well as the 8,000 companies per year that choose to run their businesses on Dynamics NAV.
Microsoft is framing the recent improvements around three themes: “Bringing two worlds together”, “Enhancing the core application and platform”, and “Creating new opportunities”.
Perisic said his team will be evaluating user experience across all aspects of NAV as an ongoing component of their work going forward.
Leveraging other Microsoft cloud services
Power BI integration now includes the ability to show a chart from a report in a workspace and then to expand out that Power BI report to offer full access to the tabs and charts without leaving the NAV client. And as Power BI users individually develop new reports, shared reports will become available to any NAV users with whom the Power BI report has been shared.
Cortana Intelligence Suite capabilities will also begin to appear in NAV 2017, starting with use cases including cash flow forecasting and inventory forecasts.
Inventory forecasts will also take advantage of notifications, a new feature that Perisic described as “a small step in the demo but a huge step for NAV.” Notifications will change the nature of users’ interaction with the system, he believes, by shifting the interactive nature of NAV from one of a back and forth approach to one where users get input – and the ability to act upon those notifications – at the right time, not just after submitting a form or completing an action.
Enhancing the Outlook experience
NAV 2017 has an improved ability to understand the context of Outlook with more and, Microsoft says, more accurate semantic analysis of emails and meeting requests to surface NAV pages.
I guess this is clear: a much deeper Office 365 integration with NAV. The Outlook integration experience will cover a range of scenarios including vendor management, sales contacts (for NAV’s own CRM tools), Document links (which use pattern matching algorithms to show related documents from NAV), and workflow.
