An organization’s responsibility to its stakeholders—customers, employees, investors—is to create long-term value. While quick wins and spikes are always welcome, it’s the compounding benefits of building value over time that marks a sustainable, successful company. Over the past several weeks, we’ve been applying this notion of long-term value to ERP, specifically to Sage Intacct. We considered the case for patience in awaiting an ROI, we revealed some secrets to achieving long-term ERP ROI success, questioned whether you’ve been defining ROI incorrectly all along, and postulated that Sage Intacct ERP continues to add value over time. We wrap up this series with five secrets that will help you amplify the long-term ERP ROI your organization derives from its ERP application.
1. Phase your implementation into “digestible” bites
There’s no sugarcoating the facts: despite whatever promises your partner makes, the implementation process is disruptive. That’s why it can make smart business sense to phase an ERP implementation into functional areas. When you eat more slowly, the benefits are more easily digested. Slowing the process down also provides the time for better decision making, affecting the long-term success of the project and increasing the likelihood of a greater ERP ROI. Work with your partner to develop the best strategy for the phased implementation—we’ve seen what works across hundreds of successful implementations.
2. Kick the spreadsheet habit
Go ahead and admit it—you’re addicted to spreadsheets. While it might seem impossible to kick the spreadsheet habit, we’re here to tell you it can be done. We propose the cutting-back approach—don’t try cold turkey. Come clean and tell your partner about the spreadsheets you are using. We can help you obtain the business data you crave directly from within Sage Intacct.
3. Learn how to drink responsibly and enjoy tomorrow
Sage Intacct is on a path of continual improvement. With four releases each year, the application is constantly evolving and adding new functionality. So much new functionality, in fact, that keeping up can feel like drinking from a fire hose. When you learn to drink responsibly—reviewing each round of improvements for the best bits—you’ll get more out of the software and won’t suffer the headache that comes with overindulgence. Your partner is your main ally in this exercise—turn to us to help you indulge in the best of what Sage Intacct has to offer.
4. Create and leverage a super user
Super users are key players in creating long-term value. In traditional ERP implementations, nurturing a Super user was practically a mandate. In the age of Cloud ERP solutions like Sage Intacct, it remains a valuable component of the implementation. Super users can serve as the primary conduit between your organization and your partner, providing feedback on how the system is being used, reporting on complications or problems, relaying new business directives. They can also explain new features and functionalities with users, along with sharing tips and tricks and organizing training. Super users are your ERP champions, reliable proponents of the short- and long-term value of Sage Intacct and they are instrumental in helping their peers embrace change.
5. Avoid stagnation and lost opportunities to cash in
On first read, this might sound like the opposite of what we suggest in #3, above, but instead it’s meant to promote an internal corporate culture of continuous improvement. Encourage employees to ask questions and challenge the existing ways—empower them to make a difference. Make Sage Intacct training available to all users to grow their expertise and confidence. Engage with your partner when you discover workflows or tasks that are redundant, inefficient or time consuming as there are likely tools we can deploy or suggestions we can offer to move you beyond those challenges.
Creating long-term value in a short-term world may sound, well, old fashioned. We’ve become conditioned to expect everything right now—a click away. When you’re dealing with something as complex and multi-faceted as your business, though, good things take time. Sage Intacct is built for success, and customers are enjoying significant and rapid returns on their investments. We just want to remind you that, by following the suggestions above, those benefits will continue to grow over time, often matching or even eclipsing the short-terms gains.
