Microsoft Dynamics NAV was originally called Navision, and Silverware is a Navision reseller. Due to its enduring popularity, many people still refer to NAV as Navision. Navision has had several names over the years based on its life cycle stage and ownership. It originally was called Navision. Later it was called Navision Attain. Microsoft acquired the company in 2002 and renamed the product Microsoft Business Solutions – Navision.
Later, as Microsoft Business Solutions sought to differentiate their 4 ERP solutions: Navision, Axapta, Solomon and Great Plains, they merged the brand and now call the solutions Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Microsoft Dynamics AX, Microsoft Dynamics SL and Microsoft Dynamics GP, respectively.
Evolution of Navision to Dynamics NAV
Microsoft Dynamics NAV first launched in Denmark in 1987 under the name of Navigator. It was the first product of its kind on the Windows platform, and was designed to be installed quickly and customized easily. Later, under the name Navision, the product launched internationally with support for multiple languages, currencies, and local tax requirements.
Microsoft acquired Navision Software in May 2002. Since then Microsoft has continued to invest heavily in further development of the product, including expanded functionality, upgraded architecture, mobile apps, enabling the product for cloud deployment, and ensuring a familiar, easy-to-use interface similar to the Microsoft Office user experience.
The Future of Navision
Over the past five years the product has had annual releases of new and enhanced functionality, with the latest version, Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016, launched worldwide in October 2015.
Navision is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) software product published by Microsoft and sold exclusively by Dynamics NAV Partners and Navision reseller and not directly by Microsoft.
Microsoft Dynamics NAV originates from Navision, a suite of accounting and business management applications which Microsoft acquired in 2002.
The product is part of the Microsoft Dynamics family, and intended to assist with finance, manufacturing, customer relationship management, supply chains, analytics and electronic commerce for Small and Medium-sized Enterprise and local subsidiaries of large international Groups. Value-added resellers (VAR)s such as Silverware have full access to the business logic source code.
Enabling Unique Business Processes
Some vendors who can’t do this easily like using the term ‘best practices’ but for many, that really means, you should adapt to the software and not the other way around. Yet in the end, what differentiates one company from another? The way they do business. If you can’t do it in a unique and better way, you won’t be the industry leader. At best you can only be ‘mediocre.’ NAV allows you to automate the processes that make your company exceptional.
Microsoft Dynamics NAV delivers customizable functionality for every business need:
Supply chain management
Customer relationship management
Sales and marketing
Human resource management
Project & Resource management

Dynamics NAV in Office 365
The key them for Dynamics NAV 2017 is integration and simplicity. This latest version of our venerable mid-market ERP solution brings significant enhancements to the core application, new features, and an even deeper integration with Office 365.
In Office 365 experience: Keep all functional areas your business by having NAV ERP and Office 365 connected. Dynamics NAV is fully integrated with Office 365 which enables you to manage business interactions with your customers and vendors directly within Outlook.
Outlook Ad-in: From the Outlook App, the integration between NAV and Office 365 supports dashboards for contacts, customers and vendors that include charts and activity cues for the record. The improved interoperability enables you to easily create customers, vendors, quotes, and invoices without leaving Outlook. There is also improved Word integration for professional looking documents. The all-in-one experience means that you can save time, increase accuracy, and deliver better customer experiences by navigating seamlessly between NAV and Office 365.
Outlook Calendar: Dynamics NAV 2017 includes an add-in so you can invoice your customers based on entries in your Outlook calendar. From a calendar appointment, you can open the Dynamics NAV add-in and get an overview for the customer associated with the appointment. Then, you can create and send an invoice for the services provided in the meeting. Having this capability inside your Outlook calendar delivers game changing productivity. You work directly with attachments to the associated email. In addition, NAV makes it easy to update the add-in. Users are notified that a new version is ready for you in Outlook.
Email: The add-in also works for attachments in mail. The attachments are added to your Incoming Documents list. Incoming documents are automatically sent through an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) service. Here the documents are turned into a machine-readable format so that the invoice information can be added automatically to Dynamics NAV.
Email Templates: You can now create professional-looking email cover-letter templates that include images and invoice information, such as totals, due dates, and payment terms, to use when sending emails to customers.
Contacts: From the Contacts List in Dynamics NAV, you can manually synchronize your Dynamics NAV contacts to Office 365 People. The contacts from Office 365 will sync back to Dynamics NAV. There is a filter that can be applied to the synchronization process so users will only need to sync the contacts they use most often. This same filter is used during the automatic background sync as well. This synchronization process also works with Microsoft Outlook on the desktop.

Depending on your organization’s functional requirements, you will choose the appropriate edition of Dynamics NAV. Dynamics NAV software functionality is pre-packaged in the Starter Park and the Extended Pack. Silverware will help you determine which edition to implement and the correct number and type of users to license.
Microsoft Dynamics NAV Starter Pack
The required Starter Pack gives you core financials and distribution management functionality to help you:
Gain control and insights over your finances
Manage sales items and materials in a distribution environment
Provide licensed users a singular view of the business from virtually anywhere through a variety of devices
And, to top it off, the Starter Pack includes your first three Full Concurrent User CALs. For many customers, the Starter Pack is the only module they’ll ever need.
Microsoft Dynamics NAV Extended Pack
The optional and additive Extended Pack adds functionality that integrates core financials and distribution management capabilities with industry specific functionality extensions such as:
Manufacturing to support and control the manufacturing environment
Warehousing to manage the warehouse to support operations
Professional Services to manage the billables generated by consultants
Basic Customer Relationship Management (CRM) to manage customer and supplier relationships and offer the highest quality of service and support
Note: Licenses for additional Microsoft software required to run a NAV solution, such as Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft SQL Server, and Microsoft SharePoint Server, are not included with the Starter Pack, the Extended Pack, or any of the user access licenses.
Microsoft also gives you choice about how you pay for your NAV license. Silverware will also help you understand the licensing options. You can own your NAV license or access the functionality through a monthly subscription.
Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015 is licensed through one of two licensing models: Perpetual Licensing and Subscription Licensing.
With Perpetual Licensing, you license the software with permanent usage rights. So, you can use the licensed version of the software for as long as you choose. Perpetual Licensing might be for you if you prefer an upfront investment or if you want to manage the solution internally, and will run the software on your premises (or, subject to license mobility rights, have it hosted by a third party Infrastructure as a Service [IaaS] provider acting as your agent).
With Subscription Licensing, you license non-perpetual rights to use the software, meaning you can use the software only during the term of the agreement secured by periodic payments. This model lowers your initial licensing costs and provides you with the flexibility to increase or decrease subscription license counts from one subscription term to the next. You can use Subscription Licensing when you want to have the NAV ERP solution hosted and managed as Software as a Service (SaaS) by Silverware or any third party. Alternatively, the software may be deployed on your premises, provided that Silverware provides day-to-day management services and maintains sole control over the solution.
